DAMLATAS MAGARASI

On the west side of the Alanya peninsula lies the Damlatas Magarasi, or the stalactite cave. It was discovered accidentally in 1948, when rocks were blown up to extract stones for the construction of the harbour. Scientific research subsequently showed that this stalactite cave has a beneficial effect on asthmatic conditions. This announcement in the newspapers led to an unprecedented flow of tourists and asthmatics who wanted to experience this "miracle" themselves. Because there was not enough space in Alanya at that time to accommodate all visitors, new hotels were built everywhere. This may have been the start of the start of tourism in Alanya.

Please don’t expect too much of the cave as a tourist attraction: the cave merely consists of a rather small space that you reach by descending a staircase. There are benches here, partly placed for asthma patients so that they can follow a cure here. The healing effect of the cave has to do with the composition of the air. It consists of a quantity of carbon dioxide that is many times higher than that in normal air. The same applies to the humidity level which is higher than usual and, in addition, the air contains some radioactivity. All of these factors should help in the treatment of asthmatic conditions.
